A 24-year-old female corps member, Oluwaseyifunmi Akande, has made an emotional plea for assistance from Nigerians as she battles to raise N6 million for a hip replacement surgery.
The graduate of Health Information Management from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, fell seriously ill in August 2024 while serving in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and her health condition has since worsened, leaving her unable to stand or walk.
The family’s ordeal began five months ago when Oluwaseyifunmi’s condition started like a regular illness. However, it soon became clear that her condition was more serious. After being referred to multiple hospitals, including LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), it was recommended that she undergo hip replacement surgery to save her life.

Her aunt, Olayinka Bashiru, explained the financial strain the family is experiencing as they seek to cover the N6 million required for the surgery, especially given the current economic challenges in Nigeria. Despite spending over N3 million since August on various treatments and hospital visits, they are still unable to afford the surgery.
Olayinka Bashiru shared their journey: “She started off with what we thought was a minor illness. But after multiple hospital visits, including scans that revealed liver and spleen enlargement, we were referred to OAUTH, where an orthopedic surgeon confirmed that her hip bones were severely damaged, and surgery was the only option.”
She continued, “We have nothing left; we’ve borrowed and spent all we could. Now, we’re pleading for help from Nigerians to support her in this crucial moment of her life.”
