In a bold move to tackle power infrastructure vandalism, the Federal Government has announced the formation of a specialized security unit, dubbed the “Power Rangers,” to safeguard the nation’s electricity installations.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed the initiative during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday. According to him, the unit will be made up of officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and will be deployed nationwide to protect power installations from sabotage and vandalism.
Tunji-Ojo explained that the decision stemmed from the government’s realization that a sector-specific security strategy was necessary to address the increasing attacks on critical infrastructure. He likened the move to the successful deployment of Mines Marshalls, a security outfit introduced in 2024 to protect the mining sector.
“We cannot afford to treat all security challenges with the same approach. Each sector has unique risks, and power infrastructure is too critical to be left unprotected,” he said.
The minister emphasized that officers assigned to the unit would undergo thorough screening to ensure they have the necessary expertise, physical capacity, and competence to handle the job.
“There is no state in Nigeria without key power installations. This initiative will ensure that every region has dedicated security personnel guarding these vital assets,” he added.
Although the Power Rangers initiative has been confirmed, the government has yet to announce an official launch date. However, preparations are already in motion, with officers being vetted and assigned to their respective locations.
The establishment of this security unit reflects the government’s commitment to tackling the persistent issue of power infrastructure vandalism, which has significantly contributed to electricity shortages across the country.
