Oba Abimbola Owoade has officially been crowned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
The coronation ceremony, held on Saturday at Oliveth Baptist High School, Oyo, witnessed a gathering of notable Nigerians.
Governor Seyi Makinde led the dignitaries, including prominent Yoruba traditional rulers and respected figures from across the country.
Among those present were the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
Other royal figures included the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi.
The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, also attended the historic ceremony in honor of the new king.
Ahead of the event, the Oyo State Government strengthened security, deploying operatives across the ancient city and surrounding areas.
Oba Owoade had earlier received the staff of office and instrument of office on Monday, January 13, 2025, in Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde presented the royal instruments during a formal ceremony held at the Governor’s Office in the state capital.
Following traditional requirements, Oba Owoade successfully completed the 21-day Oro Ipebi traditional rites last Saturday, March 29, 2025.
Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of eighty-three.
The coronation of Oba Owoade has brought renewed hope and unity among the people of Oyo and the Yoruba nation.
Residents of Oyo and surrounding communities gathered in celebration, expressing optimism for a prosperous new reign under Oba Owoade.
Traditional drummers, dancers, and praise singers entertained guests with vibrant cultural performances, highlighting the richness of Yoruba heritage.
Security remained tight throughout the event, ensuring smooth proceedings and safe passage for dignitaries, guests, and residents alike.
