CJAN Commends Police for Arresting Ekpo Masquerades Who Assaulted Corps Members in Uyo

CJAN commends Akwa Ibom Police for arresting Ekpo masquerades who assaulted NYSC members in Uyo, highlighting the need for corps member safety.

The Corpers’ Journey Advocacy Network (CJAN) has commended the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for swiftly arresting members of the Ekpo masquerade group who allegedly extorted and assaulted National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Uyo.

In a statement signed by its Managing Director, Taiwo Ajayi, CJAN described the incident as “a shameful abuse of cultural heritage” and lauded the police for their prompt intervention to protect citizens, especially corps members serving in the state.

“We commend the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for acting swiftly. The assault on corps members is not just an attack on individuals but on the spirit of national service. Culture should unite and celebrate, not intimidate or harm,” Ajayi said.

He called on state governments and security agencies across the country to strengthen protection for corps members, adding that CJAN would continue to push for improved welfare and safety measures through its advocacy network.

“Corps members deserve to feel safe wherever they are posted. The NYSC scheme is about unity and development, and no one should have to serve in fear,” he added.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the suspects were arrested after a distress call from a concerned citizen reported that the masquerades had blocked a major road, attacked passersby, and demanded money from motorists.
The group’s leader, Uwem Umanah, 45, was said to have authorized members to parade in public despite an existing ban on masquerade activities in the state.

Another suspect, David Michael, 34, was apprehended in Ikot Obong Edong while preparing to invade a nearby community in full masquerade regalia.
Both suspects have since been charged to court after a thorough investigation, according to the police.

Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, condemned the acts, warning that the command would not tolerate any form of lawlessness or violence under the guise of cultural practices. He assured that the police would continue to protect all residents, especially NYSC members serving in the state.
