A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member has died following an alleged assault by a vigilante group in Buruku Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue state.
Authorities have confirmed arrests and pledged that those responsible will face prosecution.
The deceased, identified as Ben Agir Une, an indigene of Tongov in Katsina-Ala LGA, was reportedly apprehended during a night patrol in Anibros Settlement on suspicion of possessing a stolen motorcycle.
Witnesses alleged that Une was subjected to a severe beating, leaving him critically injured.
He was later taken to a police station, where officers advised that he should be rushed to hospital.
Despite receiving urgent medical attention, he was later pronounced dead.
Reacting to the incident, the Executive Chairman of Buruku LGA, Hon. Raymond Zege Aondoakura, condemned the assault, describing it as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable.”
He stressed that the act was a grave violation of justice and human dignity, and assured that it would not be tolerated.
“This unfortunate act does not in any way represent who we are as a people. It is a grave violation, and it will not be tolerated,” he said, extending condolences to Une’s family, the people of Katsina-Ala, and the NYSC management.
The chairman confirmed that all suspects involved have been apprehended by security agencies and ordered a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution.
He further warned community vigilante groups against taking the law into their own hands, emphasising that suspects must always be handed over to the police.
Hon. Aondoakura reassured residents of Buruku LGA of his administration’s commitment to peace, security, and the rule of law, noting that the tragic loss of a corps member is a painful blow to the nation.
