NYSC Abduction: NANS Raises Questions Over Transport Company, Calls For Urgent Investigation

The recent abduction of prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State has raised fresh concerns over the safety of young Nigerians travelling to orientation camps across the country.

The incident occurred on October 1, 2026, along the Owerri–Onitsha Road around Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, where gunmen reportedly attacked two buses conveying prospective corps members travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

The Imo State Police Command later confirmed that 10 victims had been rescued, while security agencies intensified efforts to locate those still in captivity.

The incident has continued to generate concern among families, students, prospective corps members and youth organisations, particularly over the circumstances surrounding the attack.

NANS Raises Fresh Questions

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has now called for an urgent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction.

In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, NANS said it had received information suggesting that the two buses conveying the prospective corps members were travelling together when they reached the location where the attack occurred.

According to the students’ body, it was alleged that one of the drivers stopped, claiming that he wanted to give money to someone on the other side of the road.

NANS said the second bus subsequently stopped alongside the first, after which armed men allegedly emerged from the bush and abducted the corps members.

The association described as particularly concerning information that neither of the two drivers was reportedly abducted.

NANS also said the kidnappers were allegedly already positioned around the location where the buses stopped.

The association stressed that it was not in a position to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident or attribute responsibility to any individual or transport company.

However, it said the circumstances raised questions that required urgent investigation.

NANS Calls For Probe Of UDUA KING Transport Service

NANS called on security agencies and relevant government authorities to investigate the operations of UDUA KING Transport Service in connection with the incident.

The association further said the transport company’s operations should, where necessary, be suspended pending the conclusion of an investigation.

According to NANS, the objective should be to establish exactly what happened and determine whether anyone compromised the safety of the victims.

The association also advised students and other travellers to exercise extreme caution and, pending clarification of the circumstances surrounding the incident, consider avoiding UDUA KING Transport Service.

NANS, however, did not state that the transport company was responsible for the abduction. Its statement specifically called for an investigation to establish the facts.

Security Agencies Continue Rescue Efforts

The development comes as security agencies continue efforts to locate and rescue the prospective corps members still believed to be in captivity.

The Nigeria Police Force has deployed additional personnel and tactical teams to support the operation.

Authorities have also reported locating an area believed to be connected to the abductors. However, security concerns, including reports of possible improvised explosive devices around the location, have reportedly complicated attempts to move directly into the area.

The exact number of prospective corps members still in captivity has varied across reports, following the rescue of some victims.

Families of those still missing continue to await their safe return.

A Growing Safety Concern For Prospective Corps Members

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by young Nigerians travelling across states for national service.

Every year, thousands of graduates leave their homes and travel considerable distances to report at NYSC orientation camps.

For many, the journey is their first major trip outside their home state.

The Imo incident has therefore renewed calls for stronger safety measures for prospective corps members before and during their journeys to orientation camps.

Transport arrangements, route security, emergency communication and coordination between NYSC authorities, transport operators and security agencies remain critical issues that require attention.

What Happens Next?

Beyond the immediate effort to rescue the abducted prospective corps members, the circumstances surrounding the attack require a thorough investigation.

The questions raised by NANS must be addressed through evidence-based investigation rather than speculation.

The families of the victims deserve clear answers about what happened to their loved ones.

Prospective corps members also deserve confidence that travelling to fulfil their national service obligations will not expose them to avoidable danger.

For Corpers’ Journey, the incident underscores the need to place the safety and welfare of Nigerian youths at the centre of conversations surrounding national service.

As the rescue operation continues, the priority remains clear: the safe return of every prospective corps member still in captivity and a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Corpers’ Journey will continue to monitor the situation and provide verified updates as they emerge.
