Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has rewarded nine ex-corps members of Abia origin with automatic employment after they won the prestigious President’s NYSC Honours Award.
The recognition came during a reception at the Governor’s Banquet Hall on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
The honourees were celebrated for their outstanding performances during their service year across different states of deployment, bringing pride to Abia State.
Speaking at the event, Governor Otti praised their resilience, excellence, and service to humanity, stressing that success is part of Abia youths’ identity.
He cited the example of Mr. Benson Ojeikere, an Edo State indigene who, over 27 years ago, earned employment in Abia after emerging the best corps member. Today, Ojeikere serves as Head of Service in the state.
“As a government, we want to encourage you to continue to excel. You will be leaving here with a token on behalf of the state government. More importantly, I have decided to temporarily lift the embargo on employment to absorb the nine of you into the state workforce with immediate effect,” Governor Otti declared.
Barr. (Mrs.) Gladys Adama, Abia State NYSC Coordinator, commended the Governor for hosting the awardees and for his continued support of the scheme. She explained that the honourees were carefully selected through a rigorous process, which highlighted the resilience and talent of Abia youths.
In his vote of thanks, Mr. Nwogu Chinonso (ZM/23B/1039), speaking on behalf of the recipients, expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for the life-changing opportunity. He pledged that they would continue to make Abia proud in their professional and personal endeavours.
The President’s NYSC Honours Award comes with benefits including scholarships up to Ph.D. level, automatic employment in federal establishments, and recognition plaques signed by the President and Commander-in-Chief. To qualify, recipients must have excelled in NYSC programmes and executed impactful community development projects.
Governor Otti assured that his administration remains committed to creating opportunities for young people and rewarding excellence.
