Vulcaniser Arrested for Allegedly Setting Girlfriend Ablaze in Abuja

A 47-year-old vulcaniser, Saheed Ganiyu, has been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command after allegedly setting his girlfriend, Esther, ablaze during a heated altercation at Jabi Motor Park, Abuja.

The incident, which occurred on December 29, 2024, reportedly began as an argument between the couple over Esther’s consumption of alcohol. According to witnesses, Ganiyu had a plastic bottle containing petrol, which he allegedly poured on his girlfriend before igniting it with a lighter. The victim, 32, suffered severe burns and is currently battling for her life at the National Hospital, Abuja.

A distress call alerted the police, who rushed to the scene and found Ganiyu severely beaten by an enraged mob. Both he and Esther were taken to the hospital for medical attention. While Esther remains hospitalized, Ganiyu was discharged and subsequently detained at the Utako Police Division.

During an interview, Ganiyu denied intentionally setting Esther on fire. He claimed the incident was an accident, explaining that petrol from the bottle he held under his arm had accidentally dripped onto Esther’s dress during a struggle. Ganiyu stated that he had been trying to stop Esther from consuming alcohol, a habit he said he disapproved of despite his own use of cigarettes.

“I didn’t pour petrol on her. I love her and didn’t want her to continue drinking. It was while trying to stop her that the accident happened,” Ganiyu said. He further expressed remorse, adding that he wished to marry her and take care of her.

Esther’s uncle, Modaki Kofur, a retired Warrant Officer, confirmed her critical condition and revealed that the family is struggling to afford her medical treatment. He noted that Esther had been living with him before moving out over two years ago.

The Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, condemned the act and urged the public to exercise patience and seek peaceful resolutions during disagreements. He also emphasized the importance of controlling anger to prevent tragic outcomes.

The police have commenced an investigation into the incident, while Ganiyu remains in custody, awaiting further action. Esther’s recovery is being closely monitored, with medical professionals estimating she may require months of treatment.
