In Kogi State, a silent yet transformative revolution is taking place, led by an NYSC Corps Member, Tosin Toluwaloju.
Through her Future Forward Project, she’s addressing pressing challenges faced by young girls, including a lack of life skills, career guidance, and menstrual health education.
The initiative, part of Toluwaloju’s Community Development Service (CDS), was launched at Crowther Memorial School and Government Girls Secondary School in Lokoja, reaching over 400 students. With plans to extend the program to three additional schools, the project aims to empower 1,000 girls with tools for self-reliance and informed decision-making.
The Problem
Many girls in Nigeria face barriers to education and personal development, often stemming from limited access to guidance, mentorship, and basic health education. Menstrual health remains a taboo topic in many communities, contributing to absenteeism and a lack of confidence among young girls.
The Solution
Tosin’s Future Forward Project addresses these issues head-on. It combines critical elements of career counseling, personal development, and menstrual health education. By focusing on these areas, the project tackles both the immediate needs of the girls and equips them with long-term tools for success.
Key features of the program include:
- Career Guidance: Helping girls discover and explore career options aligned with their strengths and interests.
- Menstrual Hygiene Education: Teaching the importance of menstrual health while providing sanitary pads to support attendance and confidence in school.
- Personal Development Workshops: Building self-esteem, resilience, and decision-making skills.
Collaborating for Change
The project also leverages partnerships with organizations like the Akoni Care Foundation (ACF). Founder Deborah Agbonika inspired the girls to overcome self-esteem challenges, while fellow corps member Odumuyiwa Ibukun Christianah provided practical lessons on menstrual hygiene.
By distributing over 400 sanitary pads and holding interactive sessions, the program ensures immediate impact while fostering a culture of openness and support.
The Vision
Toluwaloju emphasizes that the Future Forward Project is more than an intervention—it’s a movement. “Empowering young girls with the right knowledge and skills ensures they can make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to their communities,” she said.
As the project progresses, the goal is not just to reach 1,000 girls but to inspire systemic change in how communities support the girl child.
A Call to Action
The success of the Future Forward Project underscores the need for broader societal involvement. Policymakers, educators, and community leaders must invest in programs that address the unique challenges facing young girls.
By supporting initiatives like this, Kogi State and Nigeria as a whole can nurture a generation of confident, educated, and empowered young women ready to shape the future.
Through her dedication and vision, Tosin Toluwaloju has shown that one person can spark meaningful change—one girl at a time.
