The Federal Government has set a 2027 target for transitioning its examination system to fully computer-based testing (CBT), according to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
Alausa made the announcement during the inauguration of the Committee on Improvement of Quality Examinations in Nigeria in Abuja on Thursday. He stated that the committee’s primary task is to address challenges in the education sector, standardize examination practices, and ensure fairness and quality.
The minister highlighted the government’s commitment to combating examination malpractices, including leakages, and emphasized that students, parents, teachers, and even examination supervisors play roles in perpetuating these issues. He called for a holistic approach to tackling the problem.
By 2027, the government aims to fully implement CBT for all exams, with technology playing a central role in this shift. Alausa also pointed out the committee’s focus on eliminating local swapping of candidates and other fraudulent practices during exams.
In addition, the government will introduce three key identifiers—national identification numbers, candidate photos, and birthdates—on all examination certificates to ensure authenticity.
Alausa stressed that allowing examination malpractice to persist undermines the efforts of honest students. He urged examination bodies such as WAEC, NECO, and NAPTEB to incorporate these identifiers starting with their exams scheduled for May, June, and July.
Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, Chairman of the committee and Registrar of JAMB, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the committee and pledged to execute the assignment effectively.
