The Federal Government on Sunday held a National Church Memorial Service in honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, calling on Nigerians to reflect on his enduring legacy of discipline, patriotism, and national service.

According to a report by NTA News, the solemn event took place in Abuja, with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, leading the tributes. Akume described the former president as a “disciplined and principled leader whose life was marked by conviction, integrity, and sacrifice for the nation.”

Highlighting Buhari’s lasting contributions, the SGF pointed to landmark reforms such as the Petroleum Industry Act, enhanced national security frameworks, and expanded social protection programmes, which, he noted, will remain key milestones in Nigeria’s development journey.

Senator Akume also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in recognition of the late leader’s contributions to national growth and unity.

“This gesture is not merely symbolic,” Akume stated, “It serves to inspire future generations to lead with courage and a sense of duty, just as President Buhari did.”

The memorial service was graced by the Representative of the President of the Senate, Deputy Senate Majority Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, members of the National Assembly, serving Ministers, former Secretaries to the Government of the Federation, retired Permanent Secretaries, and other prominent dignitaries.

The gathering was a moment of national reflection, as government officials and citizens paid tribute to Buhari’s lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
