BREAKING: ASUU Calls Off Two-Week Warning Strike

ASUU President Chris Piwuna addresses journalists after calling off the union’s two-week warning strike.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its two-week warning strike, bringing a temporary end to the industrial action that had disrupted academic activities nationwide.

ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, disclosed this during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday. He explained that the decision followed an overnight meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC), which concluded around 4:00 a.m.

According to Piwuna, the union’s decision was influenced by renewed dialogue with government representatives on the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement. “We have had constructive engagements with the government. While significant progress has been made, more still needs to be done. In recognition of ongoing efforts from students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress, the NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike,” he said.

ASUU had earlier commenced the strike on October 13 over what it described as the government’s delay in addressing key issues affecting public universities. The union’s demands include the finalisation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, payment of withheld salaries and promotion arrears, improved funding and revitalisation of public universities, and an end to the alleged victimisation of lecturers at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO.

Also on the list are the settlement of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears and the release of withheld third-party deductions such as cooperative contributions and union dues.
