Sunday Asefon, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on student engagement, has called for the integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) into student identity cards.

This initiative aims to streamline data collection and provide students with more opportunities while ensuring their personal information is secure.

Asefon made the case for the integration during a visit to the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). He emphasized that the goal is to ensure every student, at all levels of education, is registered and has access to a reliable digital identification system.

“This move will not only give us accurate data on Nigerian students, but it will also create opportunities for them to access internships, skill-building programs, and job placements,” Asefon said. He believes that by linking NIN to student IDs, students will be better empowered to take charge of their futures and have access to key developmental programs.

Beyond education, Asefon stressed that the integration of NIN with student IDs would help prevent identity fraud and secure personal information. The Office of the Senior Special Assistant is dedicated to raising awareness about this initiative across schools, ensuring that students know the value of obtaining their NINs.

In response, NIMC’s Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, saying that NIMC is already working hard to boost awareness and simplify the registration process. She also praised the vision behind the initiative, noting how it aligns with the administration’s broader goals of making impactful changes that will benefit Nigerians at every level of society.
