The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) branch, has declared an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries.
In a letter dated September 11, 2025, and addressed to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olubunmi Shittu, the union said the decision followed a national directive of ASUU.
The letter, signed by FUOYE ASUU Chairman, O. A. Fagbuagun, and Financial Secretary, Ngwu Benitho, stated that the strike would continue until lecturers’ salaries were fully paid.
According to the letter, “The National Executive Council of ASUU directed that if academic staff salaries are not paid by the third day of each month, the affected branch should proceed on strike until payment is made.”
The FUOYE branch emphasized that the strike is total, indefinite, and comprehensive.
National Pattern of Industrial Actions
ASUU branches across the country have repeatedly warned that delayed salaries automatically trigger industrial action under its “No Pay, No Work” policy.
For instance, the University of Jos branch suspended activities in July 2025 over unpaid June salaries. Similarly, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, withdrew services when staff members complained of receiving payments well into the following month.
Government’s Response
Despite these disruptions, the Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, assured that the Federal Government remains committed to keeping Nigerian students in school. He dismissed fears of widespread shutdowns, pledging continued engagement with ASUU to resolve salary-related disputes.
