The family of Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga (rtd), former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), is grappling with anxiety after his abductors demanded a ₦250 million ransom for his release.

Tsiga was kidnapped from his hometown in Tsiga, Danja Local Government Area of Katsina State, on Thursday. Nine other villagers were also taken during the raid.

A relative, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the kidnappers made contact, stating their demands. Meanwhile, the Katsina State Police Command assured the public that security forces are actively working with stakeholders to secure Tsiga’s freedom.

Police spokesperson Abubakar Sadiq revealed that authorities received distress calls around 5:30 a.m. on the day of the attack, prompting an immediate response. However, by the time officers arrived, the assailants had already fled with their captives.

Eyewitnesses say the armed men stormed Tsiga’s home, forcing their way in before the retired general stepped out, asking them what they wanted. He was then taken away along with other residents.

The kidnapping highlights the ongoing security crisis in Nigeria’s North-West, where states like Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Kebbi have been plagued by banditry for years. These criminal groups operate from deep within the forests spanning multiple states, launching raids and demanding ransoms.

Despite these challenges, security forces have recorded some successes. The Katsina State Police Command recently announced that 11 suspected bandits were neutralized in January, with 85 kidnapped victims rescued. Additionally, 45 individuals were arrested for crimes ranging from armed robbery and kidnapping to homicide.

Authorities remain committed to tackling insecurity in the region, but for Tsiga’s family, the nightmare continues as they await his safe return.
