Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has opened up about his divorce from Melinda Gates, describing it as the greatest mistake of his life.
In an interview with The Times, the 69-year-old billionaire reflected on the challenges of their separation, which was announced in May 2021 and finalized in August of the same year. Despite the emotional toll, Gates acknowledged the special bond he shared with Melinda over their 27 years of marriage.
“There’s something extraordinary about spending your entire adult life with one person. The shared memories, the depth of what you’ve accomplished together, and having children—it’s all quite special,” Gates remarked.
The pair met in 1987 when Melinda joined Microsoft. Together, they co-founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and built a legacy of philanthropic work. However, their divorce also marked a professional shift, with Melinda stepping away from the foundation—a decision Gates admitted was difficult for him to accept.
“When we divorced, it was incredibly difficult. Then she chose to step away from the foundation, which I found disheartening,” he said.
Despite their separation, the two have worked to maintain an amicable relationship while co-parenting their three adult children—Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe. Gates described the aftermath of the divorce as a particularly challenging period for both of them, adding, “It has to be at the top of the list. There are others, but none that compare. The divorce was miserable for both Melinda and me for at least two years.”
Gates also reflected on his aspirations to emulate his parents’ 45-year marriage and his appreciation for the life he and Melinda built together.
