The Oluwatuyi community in Akure, Ondo State, is in deep mourning after a tragedy that claimed the lives of two young brothers, Jelad Oluwaranakinse, aged five, and Jenson Oluwaranakinse, aged three.

What started as an ordinary day took a devastating turn. Their mother, Mrs. Deborah Oluwaranakinse, had locked the boys in their modest apartment to step out and buy food. It was a decision born out of necessity, one she likely made countless times before, unaware that this moment would change everything.

The fire erupted suddenly, consuming the home with alarming speed. Neighbors, alerted by the thick black smoke and the cries for help, rushed to the scene. Desperate attempts to break into the apartment and douse the flames were met with fierce resistance from the inferno.

“We tried everything,” a tearful neighbor recounted. “Buckets of water, shouting, breaking down doors—but it was already too late.”

Calls were made to the state fire service, but by the time they arrived, the flames had engulfed the apartment completely. Inside, the two boys, trapped and helpless, were choked by the smoke before the fire claimed their lives.

The charred remains of Jelad and Jenson were later retrieved from the ruins, a heartbreaking sight that left even the most hardened onlookers overcome with grief. Their small bodies were taken to the morgue at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Akure.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident, stating, “The two male children left in the room were choked and burnt. Their mother had locked them in and gone to search for food. An investigation has commenced to determine the cause of the fire.”

For Mrs. Oluwaranakinse, the pain is immeasurable. Her search for a meal ended in an unimaginable loss—the lives of her two sons, her home, and a part of herself she will never get back.

The incident has sparked conversations about the challenges faced by struggling families, fire safety awareness, and the importance of community support during difficult times. As the Oluwatuyi community mourns this devastating loss, they are left grappling with the fragility of life and the weight of what could have been.
