A tragic incident rocked Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Sunday, as gunmen stormed the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Eagle Parish, and killed a 54-year-old prophet, Yomi Adetula, during a church service.
The attack occurred around 10:30 a.m. at the church located along Baggage Road, Odo Eran. Witnesses reported that three assailants targeted the prophet in a brutal attack that left worshippers terrified.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attackers shot Adetula and then used an axe to mutilate his head, ensuring his death.
Ogun State Police Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the tragic event in a statement issued on Sunday.
“Police officers raced to the scene and found Yomi Adetula, ‘M’, aged 54, lying lifeless in a pool of blood, his white Celestial garment stained red. His body was riddled with bullets, and his head was mangled with an axe,” Odutola stated.
She further disclosed that the attackers had brought a long double-barrel gun to the church, aimed at their target, and fired the fatal shot.
The prophet’s remains have been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue in Ilaro. Police investigations into the incident have commenced, with officers gathering clues and tracing the suspects, who reportedly fled toward the border area after the attack.
“Normalcy has been restored while possible leads are being explored to apprehend the perpetrators,” Odutola assured.
This tragic event has added to the growing concern over violent crimes in Ogun State, prompting calls for enhanced security measures in religious and community spaces.
