The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in collaboration with the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), is set to unveil an enhanced multi-purpose biometric identity card.
This initiative aims to streamline identity verification while addressing social and economic challenges in Nigeria.
Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director General and CEO of NIMC, announced the development during a media briefing in Abuja over the weekend. Also in attendance were key stakeholders, including NIBSS Managing Director, Mr. Premier Oiwoh; AfriGO Managing Director, Mrs. Ebehije Momoh; and Data Mining Company Managing Director, Mr. Femi Akande.
Dr. Coker-Odusote highlighted the card’s unique features, including biometric authentication using fingerprints, offline and online functionality, and an embedded chip for banking and financial transactions. These capabilities ensure that the card remains operational even in areas with limited internet access.
“The card enables cash withdrawals, digital token management, and email integration while embedding banking details for seamless transactions. It also supports instant identity verification, making it a game-changer for both government and private sector interventions,” she said.
The card’s design also incorporates a “Government to People” (G2P) feature, aimed at securely identifying beneficiaries of government and private sector programs. This is expected to improve service delivery and transparency in social intervention schemes.
Dr. Coker-Odusote assured that the card would be made affordable for Nigerians. She emphasized its potential to uplift over 133 million citizens out of poverty by enhancing access to essential services and financial inclusion.
NIBSS Managing Director, Mr. Premier Oiwoh, explained the organization’s role in ensuring the card’s interoperability and integration with Nigeria’s financial systems. He noted that the card supports Afrigo and other payment platforms, enhancing user convenience.
“With your fingerprint, you can authenticate transactions or simply scan the card’s QR code to access financial details. It’s a proud moment for Nigeria as we revolutionize identity and payment systems,” Oiwoh said.
Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Director of the Card Management team, added that the card offers a “3-in-1” solution: identity verification, access to government services, and financial transactions.
Afrigo’s Managing Director, Mrs. Ebehije Momoh, described the initiative as a transformational milestone in Nigeria’s identity system, expressing optimism about its rollout.
The new biometric ID card is expected to enhance national security, streamline service delivery, and boost confidence in the country’s identity management framework.
