NYSC Allocates ₦520m for Ambulances, ₦120m for Bunk Beds in 2025 Budget
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has unveiled plans to improve corps members’ welfare in its 2025 budget, sparking conversations nationwide
The proposal includes ₦520 million for four ambulance buses, ₦120 million for bunk beds, and ₦35 million for life jackets. While these plans appear promising, concerns over-inflated costs and lack of transparency have sparked heated debates.
The spotlight has been on the staggering ₦520 million allocated for just four ambulance buses, translating to ₦130 million per bus. Many Nigerians have questioned how a single ambulance could cost that much.
“It doesn’t add up,” said Victor Akande, a former corps member. “Is there something special about these ambulances? The NYSC needs to explain this to Nigerians.”
To ease accommodation struggles, ₦120 million has been allocated for 1,000 double bunk beds, while ₦52 million will go toward mattresses. Though this seems like a step in the right direction, critics argue that it barely scratches the surface of the challenges faced in overcrowded orientation camps.
“For years, we’ve been hearing about poor living conditions in camps,” said Sarah Agbo, the mother of a serving corps member. “Will these beds and mattresses even reach the camps that need them most?”
The budget also highlights efforts to improve safety, with ₦35 million set aside for life jackets and ₦45 million allocated for boreholes in orientation camps. However, there’s little information on which camps will benefit.
“Flood-prone states desperately need life jackets, and many camps still lack basic water supply,” noted Akande. “Without specific details, how can we trust that these funds will go where they’re needed most?”
Another big-ticket item is the ₦300 million set aside for constructing a Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Centre. Yet, the NYSC has not disclosed the location of the proposed facility, raising concerns about accessibility for corps members.
“How do you allocate such a large sum for a project without naming where it will be built?” asked governance advocate Ngozi Ude. “This lack of clarity makes it hard to trust the process.”

Other notable budget allocations include ₦400 million for four pickup vans, pegged at ₦100 million each; ₦136 million for 160 laptops, averaging ₦850,000 per laptop; ₦78 million for an MF tractor; ₦24 million for solar-powered security lights; and ₦28.9 million for Man O’ War gadgets.
“These prices seem out of touch with reality,” said Ude. “Are there no cheaper options? It raises questions about accountability.”
While the NYSC says the budget aims to improve corps members’ welfare and operational efficiency, many argue it misses critical priorities, such as renovating dilapidated camps or providing advanced training programs for life after service.
“Budgets should reflect what matters most,” said Ude. “Why is so much being spent on vehicles and gadgets instead of fixing run-down facilities or creating opportunities for corps members to thrive?”

As the NYSC defends its proposed spending, Nigerians are demanding detailed explanations and assurances that every naira will be spent responsibly. For now, many remain skeptical, with calls for accountability growing louder by the day.
In the words of Akande, “This isn’t just about money; it’s about trust. The NYSC must show us that these funds will truly benefit the youth who serve this country.”NYSC’s 2025 Budget Stirs Debate Over Ambulance Costs, Corps Welfare

HND Graduates Protest NYSC Exclusion Policy
A group of Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates with part-time National Diploma (ND) backgrounds staged a peaceful protest on Monday at the Lagos National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) secretariat, condemning a proposed policy that could exclude them from participating in the NYSC scheme.
Carrying placards with messages such as “Say No to Discrimination in NYSC” and “Equal Rights for All,” the protesters demanded an immediate reversal of the policy as the Batch C Stream II registration commenced.
Majaro Temitope, an HND graduate from Yaba College of Technology, described the policy as discriminatory and unfair to those who transitioned from part-time ND programmes to full-time HND studies.
“Many of us struggled through our ND on part-time, only to face exclusion now. We hope our peaceful protest sparks a dialogue,” Temitope said, urging the NYSC Director-General and the Minister of Education to intervene.

The demonstrators said they had written to relevant authorities, including the NYSC and JAMB, but had yet to receive a response.
Adebola Osunfunrewa, a representative of the Education Rights Campaign, called the proposed exclusion a setback for Nigeria’s educational system.
“How can over 3,000 graduates eager to serve be denied in a country facing teacher shortages?” Osunfunrewa questioned, urging authorities to reconsider the policy.
In response, Lagos NYSC Coordinator Christiana Salwang, represented by Assistant Director Ehimuenma Itohan, assured the protesters that their concerns had been forwarded to the NYSC Director-General.
“The director general is reviewing the matter and is committed to addressing your grievances within policy guidelines,” Itohan said, urging the protesters to remain calm.
As the mobilisation process continues, the affected graduates await a decision on their eligibility to serve.

NYSC and Age: What Every Graduate Must Know Before Turning 30
Age remains a key determinant of eligibility for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nigeria, as outlined in Section 2 of the NYSC Act.
According to the Act, Nigerian graduates, whether from local or foreign institutions, are eligible to participate in the scheme as long as they graduate before their 30th birthday.
For those above the age limit, the NYSC issues an Exemption Letter, which serves as a legal equivalent to the NYSC discharge certificate required for employment in Nigeria.

However, contrary to popular belief, turning 30 does not automatically disqualify graduates from the scheme. Situations such as academic strikes or administrative delays in mobilization may extend a graduate’s eligibility, provided they completed their academic program before their 30th birthday.
This provision ensures fairness, acknowledging challenges that may delay enlistment but do not diminish the graduate’s qualification to serve.

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has announced an upcoming increase in the monthly allowance for corps members to N77,000.
Ahmed made this revelation in Abuja while commissioning a staff bus donated by Capital Express Insurance Company. He confirmed that arrangements for the new allowance have been finalised, marking a significant step towards improving the welfare of corps members.
In his remarks, the NYSC DG reiterated his commitment to the welfare and security of corps members, assuring them that by 2025, they will receive all the benefits they are entitled to under the new national minimum wage structure.

It should be noted that corps members have been receiving N33,000 monthly, even after President Bola Tinubu signed the new national minimum wage bill into law in July 2024.
The newly commissioned staff bus aims to alleviate transportation challenges faced by NYSC staff, a gesture Ahmed described as timely and impactful. He acknowledged the daily struggles faced by staff and corps members in commuting to their places of work.
This development is expected to bring relief and motivation to corps members, while further strengthening the NYSC’s commitment to their welfare and productivity.
