NYSC Allocates ₦520m for Ambulances, ₦120m for Bunk Beds in 2025 Budget
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has unveiled plans to improve corps members’ welfare in its 2025 budget, sparking conversations nationwide
The proposal includes ₦520 million for four ambulance buses, ₦120 million for bunk beds, and ₦35 million for life jackets. While these plans appear promising, concerns over-inflated costs and lack of transparency have sparked heated debates.
The spotlight has been on the staggering ₦520 million allocated for just four ambulance buses, translating to ₦130 million per bus. Many Nigerians have questioned how a single ambulance could cost that much.
“It doesn’t add up,” said Victor Akande, a former corps member. “Is there something special about these ambulances? The NYSC needs to explain this to Nigerians.”
To ease accommodation struggles, ₦120 million has been allocated for 1,000 double bunk beds, while ₦52 million will go toward mattresses. Though this seems like a step in the right direction, critics argue that it barely scratches the surface of the challenges faced in overcrowded orientation camps.
“For years, we’ve been hearing about poor living conditions in camps,” said Sarah Agbo, the mother of a serving corps member. “Will these beds and mattresses even reach the camps that need them most?”
The budget also highlights efforts to improve safety, with ₦35 million set aside for life jackets and ₦45 million allocated for boreholes in orientation camps. However, there’s little information on which camps will benefit.
“Flood-prone states desperately need life jackets, and many camps still lack basic water supply,” noted Akande. “Without specific details, how can we trust that these funds will go where they’re needed most?”
Another big-ticket item is the ₦300 million set aside for constructing a Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Centre. Yet, the NYSC has not disclosed the location of the proposed facility, raising concerns about accessibility for corps members.
“How do you allocate such a large sum for a project without naming where it will be built?” asked governance advocate Ngozi Ude. “This lack of clarity makes it hard to trust the process.”

Other notable budget allocations include ₦400 million for four pickup vans, pegged at ₦100 million each; ₦136 million for 160 laptops, averaging ₦850,000 per laptop; ₦78 million for an MF tractor; ₦24 million for solar-powered security lights; and ₦28.9 million for Man O’ War gadgets.
“These prices seem out of touch with reality,” said Ude. “Are there no cheaper options? It raises questions about accountability.”
While the NYSC says the budget aims to improve corps members’ welfare and operational efficiency, many argue it misses critical priorities, such as renovating dilapidated camps or providing advanced training programs for life after service.
“Budgets should reflect what matters most,” said Ude. “Why is so much being spent on vehicles and gadgets instead of fixing run-down facilities or creating opportunities for corps members to thrive?”

As the NYSC defends its proposed spending, Nigerians are demanding detailed explanations and assurances that every naira will be spent responsibly. For now, many remain skeptical, with calls for accountability growing louder by the day.
In the words of Akande, “This isn’t just about money; it’s about trust. The NYSC must show us that these funds will truly benefit the youth who serve this country.”NYSC’s 2025 Budget Stirs Debate Over Ambulance Costs, Corps Welfare

Depending on your agreements with clients or the platform you’re working with, you can earn daily through freelance writing and content creation. In this line of business, you cannot survive alone with the right skills but also with other aspects, like networking, researching competitive rates, and actively seeking opportunities.
You can earn daily as a freelancer and content creator through two major methods. Firstly, you can earn through direct client work, which involves providing services directly to clients without intermediaries. You can also earn through popular dedicated platforms where you can share your portfolios and get gigs. Below are two major platforms that can ease your freelancing journey.
- Fiverr
Fiverr is a digital marketplace that connects around four million buyers to freelancers offering various services. You can promote your writing and content creation skills with clients on the platform and earn. To get started on Fiverr, you will create a professional profile, followed by account verification, to comply with the platform’s regulations.
Then, you can start creating gigs by showing off your talents and providing buyers with all the information they could need to help them decide to do business with you. To attract clients on this platform, you add a video introducing your service, send custom offers, and leave clients with multiple choices.
According to Business Insider Africa, a Fiverr user, Shrishrimal, wrote Amazon product descriptions as a side hustle while working on his eCommerce business. He reportedly made $20,000 in revenue on Fiverr in 2022, working two hours daily.
The 37-year-old used Fiverr to showcase his work, featuring examples of copy he had written and detailing his approach to give clients a clear understanding of what to expect.
Shrishrimal’s story further proves that you can earn on Fiverr with the right approach and skillset.
- Upwork
Upwork is another platform you can use to do gigs as independent professionals, earn extra income, and build freelance careers that fit your lifestyles. According to Payscale, an online compensation platform that contains on-demand employer-reported salary data, the average hourly pay for a freelance writer is ₦511.50 in 2024.
When it comes to earning potential, some clients pay as soon as they approve your delivered content. Clients may set up daily milestones for larger projects and release payments as each is completed. You can equally negotiate daily payments, particularly if you consistently deliver quality work.
For Upwork, you can earn daily based on how consistent you are with completing your writing gigs. Meanwhile, payments aren’t usually daily, but you can withdraw earnings once funds are available. Payments on Fiverr are released after the client accepts the work, but it takes a few days for the funds to clear for withdrawal.

- Pay per lead (PPL): The affiliate gets paid when a referred user fills out a form, signs up for a trial, or takes any other action the merchant considers a lead.

Kidnappers in Zamfara State are demanding a ransom of N50 million for the release of Bassey Daniel, the last of eight recently abducted graduates from Akwa Ibom State.
Margaret Daniel, the mother of the victim, shared her distressing situation with Vanguard in her community, Afaha Ube Itam, Itu Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. Overwhelmed with emotion, Mrs. Daniel expressed her despair over the impossible ransom demand.
“I am just a petty trader, selling akara and bread. How can I raise such an amount? I am helpless,” she said tearfully. “When they mentioned that amount, I fell sick. Why my only son? They kidnapped nine people that day in Zamfara; the other eight are free, but they want N50 million for my son.
His father died when he was just three. I raised him alone, sent him to school with the little I earned. I have suffered so much. I appeal to the Akwa Ibom State governor, Pastor Umo Eno, the NYSC officials, and security agencies to help bring my only son back.”
Another family member, Mr. Imoh, expressed gratitude for the efforts made by security agencies and the NYSC management to secure the release of the other victims. He also pleaded for their continued assistance to free Bassey.
“We are worried. Seeing corps members in their uniforms makes his mother very sad. We are begging for help,” Imoh said.
It is worth noting that the second-to-last victim, a female, was freed on June 12, 2024, amid speculations that her family paid a significant undisclosed amount for her release.
