The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has announced that corps members across Nigeria will begin receiving a new monthly allowance of N77,000, starting in March 2025.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, which was shared with journalists.
Brigadier General Nafiu reaffirmed that the NYSC management and the Federal Government remain committed to improving the welfare of corps members, emphasizing that their well-being remains a top priority.
“With effect from March, you are going to receive the sum of Seventy-Seven Thousand Naira as your monthly allowance. NYSC is good at record-keeping, and I can assure you that your money will be paid. The Nation and the Scheme appreciate you,” he stated.
Background on the Allowance Increase
The decision to increase the NYSC allowance aligns with the Federal Government’s adjustment of the national minimum wage. In 2024, the government enacted the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act, which raised the minimum wage to N70,000, prompting a corresponding increase in corps members’ stipends.
Following this amendment, the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission issued a letter in September 2024, approving the increment from N33,000 to N77,000. To accommodate the new allowance, the Federal Government allocated N430.7 billion to the NYSC in the 2025 budget, with N72.9 billion earmarked specifically for corps members’ stipends.
Delayed Implementation and Assurance of Payment
Despite the approval and budgetary provisions, corps members continued to receive the previous stipend of N33,000 as of February 2025, due to delays in implementation. However, Brigadier General Nafiu assured corps members that the NYSC would execute payments promptly, emphasizing the scheme’s track record of accurate financial management.
Call for Dedication and National Unity
Addressing corps members, General Nafiu urged them to remain disciplined, dedicated, and focused on their national assignments. He also highlighted NYSC’s role in fostering national unity, encouraging Nigerians to support and uphold the objectives of the scheme.
In response, Corps Member Zaka Deborah Alheri (FC/24A/5831), speaking on behalf of her colleagues at the Garki Zone, commended the Director-General’s commitment to the welfare of corps members and the prompt implementation of the increased allowance.
