The ancient city of Oyo erupted in celebration on Monday as residents welcomed the new Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Owoade, marking his first official entry into the town. His arrival followed the presentation of the instruments of office by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
Oba Owoade becomes the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding Oba Lamidi Atanda Adeyemi, who passed away over two years ago.
In anticipation of the historic moment, all markets in Oyo, including the iconic Akesan market, were closed as residents lined major roads leading to the palace and the monarch’s family house in Agure to catch a glimpse of the new ruler.
The Iyaloja of Oyo, Alhaja Adijat Bakare, explained that the closure of markets was in line with the customs of the Oyo people. “This is a momentous occasion for us, and it is essential to honour our new Oba in line with our cultural practices,” she said.
Market women and other residents expressed excitement, describing Oba Owoade as a symbol of unity and prosperity for Oyo Town.
“We are thrilled to have a new Alaafin who embodies the values and traditions we hold dear. His reign is expected to bring peace and prosperity to our town,” Bakare added.

The streets of Oyo were adorned with colorful displays of traditional attires, drumming, and dancing, showcasing the rich Yoruba cultural heritage.
Upon his arrival at Owode around 1:50 PM in a black G-Wagon, Oba Owoade was received by notable sons and daughters of the town, accompanied by heavy security, including Operation Burst, Police, Civil Defense, and Amotekun personnel.
Traditional rites commenced immediately after his arrival, and the new monarch will undergo 21 days of seclusion before his official coronation.
Baba Iyaji Oyo, High Chief Mukaila Afonja, noted that the town’s overwhelming acceptance of Oba Owoade’s selection signifies unity. He urged the monarch to exhibit a fatherly spirit by accommodating diverse interests and forgiving past grievances.
“The entire town has shown acceptance by trooping out to welcome him amidst fanfare and jubilation,” Afonja remarked.
The celebrations are set to continue throughout the week, with cultural events planned to honor the new Alaafin and foster unity within the community.
