The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has issued a warning that anyone who refuses to assist an officer under attack could face a fine of N100,000 or imprisonment for up to three months.
This directive is in accordance with Section 99 of the Police Act 2020, which states that individuals who neglect or refuse to assist a police officer in distress during the discharge of their duty will be held accountable.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the NPF spokesperson, emphasized the importance of supporting officers in danger, following a viral video that showed a confrontation between a police officer and a woman. He further noted that obstructing or assaulting a police officer in the course of their duty is a punishable offense under Section 98, with penalties of up to N500,000 or six months’ imprisonment.
The police have made it clear that citizens are obligated to aid law enforcement officers and judicial authorities in apprehending suspects or preventing escapes when requested.
