The High Court of Justice in Lafia witnessed an emotional scene on Monday as Timileyin Ajayi, the suspect accused of murdering Salome Adaidu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, pleaded not guilty to a charge of culpable homicide.
Ajayi, who appeared before Justice Simon Aboki, faces a charge under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria, which prescribes death as the maximum penalty for culpable homicide.
The case revolves around the gruesome murder of Adaidu, whose severed head was reportedly found in Ajayi’s possession.
During initial investigations, Ajayi allegedly confessed to the crime, claiming he killed her after suspecting infidelity.
The arraignment drew attention from the public and legal professionals alike, with many highlighting the tragic loss of a young woman full of potential.
Adaidu’s friends and colleagues described her as a bright and passionate individual who had dreams of making a difference in her community. Her untimely death has left her family and community reeling in grief.
Prosecutors are expected to present evidence in the coming weeks as the court delves deeper into the circumstances surrounding the case. Ajayi remains in custody as the trial continues.
Justice Aboki urged all parties to ensure the proceedings remain fair and adhere to due process, emphasizing the importance of justice for both the accused and the victim’s family.
