A tragic tanker explosion involving a Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)-laden truck claimed the life of its driver and left one other person injured in Ibadan on Wednesday.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident in a statement. He explained that the tanker lost control, collided with two other trucks, and somersaulted into a nearby pit before erupting in flames.
The explosion occurred near Fijabi House along the Agbowo, Ojoo/Iwo Road Expressway. According to Akinyinka, the agency received a distress call at 2:45 a.m. and quickly deployed personnel to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential areas.
“On arrival, we found three trucks, spaced about 20 meters apart, involved in the incident. Unfortunately, the tanker driver was burnt to death, while the motor boy was rescued alive and rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, for treatment,” he said.
Akinyinka added that while the tanker was completely destroyed, fire service personnel were able to save the other two trucks.
The Director of Operations for the agency, Mr. Ismail Adeleke, along with his team, the police, and other security agencies, was also present to manage the situation and prevent any unrest.
The incident highlights the urgent need for stricter safety measures for tanker operations on Nigerian roads.
