In a significant move to boost education and vocational training in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, one of the largest estates in the nation’s capital.
The institution will bear his name—Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic.
The announcement came through a letter dated January 16, 2025, addressed to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. Signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the letter highlighted the federal government’s commitment to promoting technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial training in line with Nigeria’s national education policy.
Dr. Alausa requested the FCT Minister to suggest locations for both temporary and permanent sites within Gwarinpa to facilitate the polytechnic’s launch. A technical team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) will assess the recommended sites before final approval is given.
The news has been met with excitement from local leaders. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), praised the president’s decision, describing it as a “dream come true” for FCT residents.
“This marks a new chapter in our quest to empower residents with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge,” Maikalangu said in a statement through his media aide, Kingsley Madaki. He also commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his role in making this vision a reality.
The polytechnic’s establishment coincides with other milestones for the FCT, including the appointment of Zaphaniah Bitrus Jisalo, a native of the territory, as a federal minister—a first in history.
The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic is set to become a beacon of progress in the nation’s capital, equipping young Nigerians with the skills needed to excel in today’s rapidly changing world.
