The Catholic Diocese of Warri has announced the suspension of Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from the priesthood following his reported marriage in the United States.
A statement titled ‘Decree of Suspension,’ dated Thursday, January 16, 2025, was jointly signed by the Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, and Chancellor/Notary Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo. The statement revealed that Oghenerukevwe married Ms. Dora Chichah at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA, on December 29, 2024, with footage of the ceremony circulating widely on social media.
As a result of this action, the church declared that Oghenerukevwe had incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension, in line with Canon law.

The decree further explained that Rev. Fr. Oghenerukevwe, who had been out of active ministry and without official assignment in the United States, had contacted the diocese on November 30, 2024, requesting to be released from his canonical obligations as a priest. Despite the diocese’s request for necessary documents to begin the process, Oghenerukevwe went ahead and married Chichah on December 29, 2024.
As per Canon 1394 §1, the bishop confirmed that Oghenerukevwe is now officially suspended from performing any duties of the sacred ministry, and he is prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri. The suspension is immediate and carries all canonical consequences outlined in Canon 1333.
However, the church also stated that Oghenerukevwe retains the right to petition for the revocation or modification of the decree if he demonstrates a willingness to reform, in line with Canon 1734 §1.
The bishop concluded with a prayer, asking for God’s grace to guide Oghenerukevwe towards reflection, reconciliation, and eventual reform.
