Students in an art studio discussing Nigeria’s new university admission policy removing Mathematics as a compulsory subject.

The Federal Government has announced that Mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for students seeking admission into arts-related programmes in Nigerian universities.

Under the new policy, candidates applying for courses such as Fine Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, and Languages can now gain admission without Mathematics, though English Language and other relevant arts subjects will remain mandatory.

According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, the reform is aimed at expanding access to higher education for students whose strengths lie in the arts, while promoting inclusivity, creativity, and flexibility in the nation’s education system.

The Ministry noted that Mathematics would, however, remain compulsory for Science, Technology, and Social Science-related disciplines.

The new policy is expected to open up to 300,000 additional admission opportunities annually, reduce the number of out-of-school youths, and strengthen vocational and technical education pathways across the country.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have been directed to update their admission guidelines accordingly, while schools and academic counsellors are expected to adjust their subject advisories to reflect the policy change.
