Man Jailed 21 Years for Stealing Church Items in Ondo

An Ondo State Magistrate Court in Akure has sentenced Olushola Olatunde to 21 years imprisonment for stealing valuables from churches and other locations in the state capital.

Olatunde was arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for separate thefts on December 8 and 24, 2024, including stealing items worth N1,340,900 from the Revelation of God Miracle Church. The stolen items included cash, a public address system, and iron rods.

The convict was charged on six counts of stealing and illegal entry. During the trial, state prosecutor D.S. Msonter-Shagba detailed that Olatunde committed the offences between December 24, 2024, and January 8, 2025. He broke into the Revelation of God Miracle Church at No. 17 Plaza Road, Isolo, Akure, and stole a 16-channel audio mixer and a public address system, each valued at N250,000.

On the same day, he burgled the Garden of Faith Church at No. 7 Ore-Ofe Street, Oke Ijebu, Akure, stealing an amplifier, a generator, iron rods, and a tithe box, with a combined value of N534,600. He also stole 33 bags of cement worth N306,900 from Shasha Market on Kilometre 12, Owo Express Road.

Msonter-Shagba argued that the offences violated Sections 383, 390(9), 415, and 413(2) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

Magistrate Damilola Sekoni sentenced Olatunde to four years for five counts and one year for the sixth, with the sentences running concurrently. As a result, Olatunde will serve four years in prison.
