Tinubu Pledges Solar for Universities to Cut Power Costs

President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to install solar panels in public higher institutions across the country to alleviate the burden of high power tariffs.

The initiative, aimed at reducing energy costs for universities, was revealed during the 55th convocation ceremony at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Yaba.

Represented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to addressing challenges in the education sector, including the rising cost of electricity.

This comes in response to growing concerns from universities, including UNILAG, regarding the impact of power tariffs on their operations.

The President reaffirmed the government’s dedication to education, stating, “Education is the cornerstone of national development. It is the bedrock upon which a prosperous society is built.” He also highlighted the allocation of N3.52 trillion to education in the proposed 2025 budget, underscoring the administration’s efforts to strengthen the sector.

In addition to the solar panel initiative, Tinubu discussed the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), designed to provide financial support to students and widen access to higher education. He assured that these efforts, alongside ongoing reforms in tertiary education, would contribute to a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth.
