Education Ministry Denies Scrapping JSS and SSS

The Federal Ministry of Education has refuted claims that the government has scrapped the Junior and Senior Secondary School (JSS and SSS) system, clarifying that the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, only proposed a transition to a 12-year uninterrupted basic education model.

In a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo, the government stated that reports suggesting an immediate implementation of the reform were misleading.

Boriowo explained that during the Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) Meeting held on February 6, 2025, in Abuja, the minister merely presented a proposal for discussion, not an outright policy change.

“At the meeting, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa introduced a proposal aimed at transitioning to 12 years of compulsory education while maintaining the existing 6-3-3 structure,” the statement read.

According to the ministry, one key aspect of the proposal is to eliminate external examinations between JSS and SSS, ensuring students progress seamlessly without unnecessary assessment barriers. However, this remains subject to further consultation and deliberation.

“To ensure a well-informed decision, the ministry will engage stakeholders—including education policymakers, state governments, teachers, parents, and other key players—over the next eight months. The final decision will be taken at the National Council on Education meeting in October 2025,” the statement added.

The ministry urged the public to disregard reports claiming the JSS and SSS system had been abolished, emphasizing that the Federal Government remains committed to improving access to quality education in line with global best practices.
