Nigeria’s largest telecommunications provider, MTN, has begun implementing the 50% tariff increase approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January 2025.
The adjustment affects data plans but leaves call and SMS rates unchanged for now. A senior MTN executive, who requested anonymity, confirmed the development, stating that the price updates are being rolled out gradually across different data plans.
New MTN Data Prices
Checks on Tuesday revealed significant price increases across various data bundles:
1.5GB (formerly ₦1,000) → 1.8GB now ₦1,500
15GB (formerly ₦4,500) → now ₦6,500
20GB (formerly ₦5,500) → now ₦7,500
600GB (90-day plan) – ₦75,000 → ₦120,000
1.5TB (90-day plan) – ₦150,000 → ₦240,000
NCC’s Justification for the Increase
The NCC, in a statement issued on January 20, 2025, cited rising operational costs and the need to sustain telecom services as reasons for approving the new tariff. The Commission emphasized that this decision falls under its regulatory powers as outlined in Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
Public Reaction and Opposition
However, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has rejected the tariff hike, threatening legal action unless the increase is reduced to 10% instead of the approved 50%.
The new pricing structure is being gradually applied, and more adjustments are expected in the coming weeks as MTN finalizes its rollout.
