The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade, has officially commenced the 21-day Òrò Ìpêbí traditional rites, a significant ritual preceding his ascension to the throne.
The Chief of Staff announced the announcement to the Kabiyesi, Mr. Rotimi Osuntola, in a statement shared with reporters in Ibadan.
The rites, which began on March 7, 2025, will run until March 29, 2025. According to the statement, Òrò Ìpêbí is a sacred custom that requires the incoming Alaafin to enter a period of absolute seclusion.
Curfew Enforced in Oyo Township
As part of the traditional rites, a curfew will be enforced in Oyo township from 8 pm to 6 am daily throughout the 21-day period.
Movement will be restricted, and anyone found violating the curfew will face arrest and detention until 7 am the following morning.
The statement urged residents to respect the tradition, stating, “It is essential to understand that Òrò Ìpêbí entails the incoming Aláàfin entering a state of absolute seclusion, a sacred tradition that must be honored by all.”
Coronation Ceremony Set for April 5
Following the completion of the rites, the coronation ceremony of the new Alaafin is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Oyo town. The event is expected to attract dignitaries, traditional rulers, and government officials from across the country.
The Òrò Ìpêbí remains one of the most revered traditions of the Oyo Kingdom, symbolizing the Alaafin’s transition into his sacred role as custodian of Yoruba heritage.
