NYSC Names Adamawa Orientation Camp After Tinubu

The National Youth Service Corps has named its new orientation camp in Adamawa State after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking the first time such a facility has been named after a sitting political leader since the scheme began in 1973.

The youth corps agency confirmed in a post on its official X handle that the facility will be called the Bola Ahmed Tinubu NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Project, located in Malkohi, Yola.

According to the post, the Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, and Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri inspected the project site ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony.

“The Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, and the Adamawa State Governor, The Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, inspecting the site of the new Bola Ahmed Tinubu NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp project, Yola, ahead of its groundbreaking ceremony to be performed by the President,” the statement said.

First Camp Named After a Political Figure

The development marks a departure from the naming tradition of NYSC camps since the programme’s establishment on May 22, 1973. Most camps across the country follow a uniform naming pattern, which includes the name of the scheme and the location of the facility.

The only known exception is the camp in Nasarawa State, which bears the name Magaji Dan-Yamusa Permanent Orientation Camp in honour of a historical figure who resisted British colonial expansion in Northern Nigeria.

In Adamawa, the previous camp was known simply as the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Lapondo Road, Damare, Girei Local Government Area.

Part of Wider Project Commissioning

The President is expected to commission the orientation camp alongside several other state projects initiated by the Adamawa government.

These projects include a High Court complex, an automated gate at the Government House, and a newly constructed Governor’s Office complex.

The development adds to a growing number of public facilities named after President Tinubu since he assumed office in 2023.
