……Three federal suits seek records from NYSC, WAEC and UNN over certificates linked to the former Anambra State governor.
The certificate controversy surrounding Peter Obi has taken a fresh turn after Labour Party chieftain Abayomi Arabambi filed court actions involving three institutions.
Arabambi is seeking access to records linked to certificates allegedly issued to Obi by the National Youth Service Corps, the West African Examinations Council and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The development puts NYSC at the centre of renewed public attention because one of the suits concerns a certificate reportedly issued to Obi after his national service.
NYSC Faces Court Challenge
The suit against NYSC, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2063/2026, was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Arabambi is seeking records connected to NYSC Certificate No. 203495.
The document is stated in the suit to have been issued to Obi, identified as Gregory Peter-Onwubuase, on May 1, 1986.
He is also seeking information concerning how the name “Peter-Onwubuase” appears in relevant NYSC records.
The request is being pursued under the Freedom of Information Act.
WAEC Certificate Also Targeted
Arabambi has also filed a separate suit against WAEC.
The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2064/2026, concerns WAEC Certificate No. SC042560.
According to the court documents, the certificate was stated to have been issued to Obi Gregory Onwubuase in June 1978.
Arabambi wants WAEC to release a certified true copy of the relevant record.
The suit followed an earlier request that WAEC reportedly rejected.
UNN Records Requested
A third case targets the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026, was filed on September 9, 2026.
Arabambi wants the university to release existing academic and graduation records connected to Certificate No. D000198.
His request includes the university’s certificate register and records concerning the award of the degree.
He is also seeking relevant Senate or degree-award records.
What Arabambi Says He Wants
The Labour Party chieftain says the suits are focused on accessing existing institutional records.
He is not asking the court to determine whether Obi’s certificates are genuine or forged.
Instead, he wants the institutions to provide records that could establish the details contained in their official documents.
According to the court documents, he previously approached the institutions with requests for information.
He claims the institutions either refused to provide the information or failed to give reasons for withholding it.
The Controversy Remains Unresolved
The latest court actions do not establish that Obi’s certificates are fake or invalid.
They are requests for access to records held by the institutions concerned.
The courts will determine whether the requested information should be released under the applicable law.
For NYSC, the case could attract particular attention because the disputed records relate to Obi’s national service history.
The cases therefore add another legal dimension to the continuing political debate around Obi’s credentials ahead of the 2027 elections.
