PCM Lament as NYSC Postpone Registration to June

By Oluwarantimi Emmanuel

Several prospective corps members have taken to social media to express frustration following the announcement that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has postponed fresh online registration for prospective corps members until June 2026.

The development comes months after the scheme earlier announced a January start for the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream I Orientation Course.

According to a report by The Punch on January 6, 2026, the NYSC had initially disclosed that the orientation course would commence nationwide on January 21, 2026, across all 37 orientation camps in the country.

In the earlier announcement shared on its official social media platforms, the scheme stated:

“Camp registration for all corps members will take place from Wednesday, January 21 to midnight of Friday, January 23, 2026.
The swearing-in ceremony will hold on Friday, January 23, while the closing ceremony will take place on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.”

However, as January ended without any registration exercise, concerns began to mount among graduates awaiting mobilisation. The uncertainty quickly sparked discussions across social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter) and WhatsApp.

By late February, the fears of many prospective corps members were confirmed when information circulating online indicated that the next registration exercise had been postponed until June. While the NYSC has yet to provide detailed reasons for the delay, the agency has urged graduates to rely only on information released through its official communication channels.

The postponement has affected many graduates who were preparing to participate in the next mobilisation cycle. This includes those whose names were recently uploaded on the Senate or Academic Board lists by their institutions, as well as graduates who missed previous batches.

With the new timeline, many affected candidates are now expected to fall under 2026 Batch B Stream I or subsequent streams once the mobilisation process resumes.

Although the NYSC has not officially explained the reason for the shift, observers believe the delay may be linked to administrative and logistical issues. These may include verification of Senate-approved lists submitted by universities and polytechnics, coordination of orientation camps, and the growing number of graduates awaiting mobilisation.

In a statement shared through its communication platform, Corpers’ Journey Advocacy Network (CJAN) advised prospective corps members to use the waiting period to ensure their details are correctly uploaded on the NYSC Senate list by their institutions.

The association also urged graduates to monitor official NYSC platforms for verified updates and avoid relying on unconfirmed information circulating on social media.

Meanwhile, the announcement has continued to generate reactions online, with several users expressing concern over how the delay could affect job opportunities for fresh graduates.

One user, Lawal Al-Mubarak, wrote on X:

“Omo… So NYSC registration for fresh graduates has been postponed till June? With the way job postings have age limits everywhere… Omo.”

Another user, identified as STEADY, posted:

“People wey just graduate now go just dey house till June before NYSC registration start.”

Similarly, another user, alammen, reacted:

“What do you mean NYSC won’t open its portal for fresh registration till June? June?!”

Another user, Damie, also expressed concern, writing:

“NYSC just postponed registration for fresh graduates till June? Make una help me o.”
