Distraught parents of Abasifreke Joseph, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member from Utu Abak community in Akwa Ibom State, are urgently appealing for help after their daughter was kidnapped and left critically ill.
The family is calling for intervention from governments, corporate organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to provide medical aid as they struggle to cover the costs of her recovery.
Abasifreke, who was serving in Kogi State, was abducted on January 9, 2025, along the Enugu-Kogi road while traveling back to her place of primary assignment after visiting her family in Akwa Ibom. The 2024 Batch C1 Corps member, a graduate of the State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, was held captive by heavily armed and masked strangers in the forest for several days.
Her family revealed that, after paying a significant ransom to secure her release, Abasifreke was returned in a weakened state, suffering from physical trauma and other unknown ailments. She is currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Ukpom Abak. However, the family’s resources are drained, as they had to borrow heavily and even sell their only piece of land to meet the demands of the kidnappers.
Victor Joseph, Abasifreke’s elder brother, spoke to the media from his sister’s hospital bed, expressing the family’s distress. “We have no more savings. Everything we had has gone to the kidnappers. We are now turning to the public for help to get her the medical care she urgently needs,” he said.
The family is calling on all well-meaning individuals and institutions to help Abasifreke recover from the physical and psychological trauma she endured during her kidnapping.
