Man Arrested for Raping Teen Sickle Cell Carrier, Tests Positive for HIV

Peter Ugan, a 34-year-old man, has been arrested by the FCT Police Command for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl, Ngozi (surname withheld), who is a sickle cell carrier.

The shocking incident, which occurred in Mabushi, Abuja, has left the community reeling, particularly following the discovery that Ugan is HIV-positive.

The tragic event took place on January 6, 2025, when Ugan reportedly lured Ngozi, who had recently moved to Abuja to complete her secondary school education, into a room. It was alleged that Ugan forcefully deflowered her, causing severe bleeding. Despite the victim’s condition, Ugan locked her inside the room, went out to purchase non-prescribed medications in an attempt to stop the bleeding, and later released her.

The teenager’s mother discovered her daughter’s condition and raised the alarm. Ugan, who was reportedly attempting to flee, was apprehended by a mob and narrowly escaped being lynched before police officers from the Mabushi Division intervened and took him into custody.

Ngozi was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where she underwent emergency treatment, including surgery to stop the bleeding and a blood transfusion after collapsing multiple times. The victim’s condition was stabilized following medical intervention.

During the investigation, Ugan underwent a medical test, which revealed he was HIV-positive. The discovery caused additional distress for Ngozi’s family. Ugan, however, claimed ignorance of his status, stating he had undergone tests previously and was unaware of being HIV-positive.

While in police custody, Ugan alleged that the encounter was consensual, claiming Ngozi was his girlfriend. However, his account has been widely disputed and contradicted by evidence. Ugan admitted to noticing Ngozi’s virginity during the act but continued regardless, further raising questions about his actions.

The case has sparked outrage in the community, with calls for justice for Ngozi. Police investigations are ongoing as the family and the public await further legal proceedings.
