How a Five-Year-Old Boy Sets Building On Fire

A five-year-old boy accidentally set a duplex on fire while playing with matches in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Monday.

The incident occurred at Abiodun Adebiyi Close, off Yidi Road, Irewolede area in Ilorin West Local Government Area. One of the rooms in the building was completely burnt before firefighters arrived to prevent further destruction.

An eyewitness, Lanre Abdulrazaq, said thick smoke was seen billowing from the house, prompting residents to raise an alarm before the fire service intervened.

The spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed that the fire was caused by the child, who accidentally dropped a lit matchstick on a combustible material, sparking the flames.

Firefighters swiftly responded to the distress call and managed to contain the fire to a single room, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the house or neighboring buildings.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, praised the team for their quick response and urged parents to keep matches away from children, emphasizing that a single mistake could lead to devastating consequences.
