Tragedy struck the Abofia-Agbaja community in Ebonyi State as eleven family members perished in a tanker explosion on Saturday along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

The explosion occurred after the tanker lost control while descending a hilly road, crashing into other vehicles before igniting a deadly fire.

The victims, led by Mr. Jeremiah Nwaji, were traveling to Ebonyi State for the burial of their father. Mr. Ikechukwu Nwaji, the bereaved brother, shared his heartbreaking account, revealing that the entire family, including Mr. Nwaji’s wife, six children, his brother, and their servants, was tragically consumed by the fire.

The incident occurred when the family was traveling from Onitsha, Anambra State, in a Sienna vehicle borrowed from a friend. The explosion left the family members burnt beyond recognition. Mr. Ikechukwu Nwaji called on President Bola Tinubu to revisit the policy banning daytime movement of tankers, citing numerous fatalities from similar incidents.

The deceased family member, who was also a close friend to Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, was a key financial support to his family, particularly to his widow, Mrs. Chiamaka Onyibe, who lamented the loss of their “divine helper.”

The family is mourning the loss of a loved one, who had been instrumental in supporting their education and wellbeing.
