The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the launch of a phased contactless passport renewal system, set to begin in Canada on November 1, 2024.
This initiative is aimed at simplifying and modernizing the passport renewal process for Nigerians worldwide, reducing the need for in-person visits to NIS offices.
Following its launch in Canada, the service will expand to the United Kingdom, United States, and Italy on November 15, before becoming available in Nigeria and other parts of the world by December 1, 2024.
The announcement was made through a video shared on the NIS’s official X handle on October 30, 2024. The video explained the new process and emphasized the agency’s commitment to improving service delivery and aligning with global standards.
How the Contactless Passport Renewal Works
Nigerians will be able to renew their passports from the comfort of their homes by using the NIS mobile app or web portal at www.passport.immigration.gov.ng. The system is designed to be user-friendly and efficient, ensuring a seamless renewal experience.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to the new process:
- Download the App or Visit the Portal – Access the NIS mobile app from Google Play, the App Store, or Windows Store, or visit the official web portal.
- Create a Profile – Register using a valid email address to begin your application.
- Eligibility Check – Complete a quick assessment to determine if your passport qualifies for renewal.
- Provide Identity Details – Enter your National Identification Number (NIN) and current passport number for verification.
- Submit Personal Information – Fill in your bio-data and upload necessary documents such as your NIN slip, birth certificate, and local government certificate.
- Biometric Capture – Use your device to take fingerprint biometrics for identity verification.
- Review and Submit – Ensure all information is accurate before final submission.
- Make Payment – Complete the online payment to finalize your application.
- Receive Your Passport – The renewed passport will be delivered directly to the address provided by the applicant.
This innovation is expected to significantly ease the passport renewal process, especially for Nigerians living abroad, by eliminating long wait times and reducing the need for physical visits to NIS offices.
The NIS has urged Nigerians to take advantage of this new system, highlighting its efficiency, security, and ease of use.
With this step, the Nigeria Immigration Service continues its mission to provide world-class services and improve convenience for citizens both at home and abroad.
