The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to approach their primary assignments with optimism and a commitment to national development.

Speaking on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course held at the NYSC FCT Permanent Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja, Dr. Mahmoud reminded corps members that every part of the FCT is safe and well connected by modern transport and communication systems.

Represented by the Mandate Secretary for Youth and Sports Development and Chairman of the NYSC FCT Governing Board, Hon. Lawan Kolo Geidam, the Minister encouraged the corps members to integrate peacefully with their host communities and ensure that their presence contributes positively to local development.

“Your conduct and attitude in your places of assignment will determine how the people respond to you. Let your stay bring about progress and leave a legacy that posterity will be proud of,” she said.

Dr. Mahmoud also emphasized the importance of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, urging corps members to continue with the post-camp training. She described it as a practical tool for reducing post-service unemployment and promoting self-reliance among Nigerian youths.

“The SAED programme offers you the opportunity to create wealth and drive development wherever you find yourselves. Take it seriously and build on it,” she added.

Reaffirming the administration’s support, the Minister assured that the FCT Administration under the leadership of Barrister Nyesom Wike remains committed to providing a conducive environment for corps members to thrive.

Earlier, the FCT NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Samson Ateli, commended the Minister for her consistent support to the scheme, noting that her contributions have helped sustain a smooth operational environment for the corps.

He equally advised the corps members to be law-abiding, security-conscious, and to accept their postings in good faith, reminding them that the service year is an opportunity to learn, contribute, and grow.

“Avoid acts capable of tarnishing the image of the Scheme. Stay focused and make the most of your service year,” Ateli said.

The ceremony was attended by top officials from the NYSC Directorate Headquarters, the Youth and Sports Development Secretariat, security agencies, and other government representatives.
