The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has disclosed that starting from the 2025 Batch “B” Stream Two Orientation Course, every State Secretariat is to operate specific Camp Security action plan in collaboration with the Police, DSS, NSCDC, local vigilante and the military, where necessary
It said all hands must be on deck to curtail the spate of vandalisation and theft, affecting some NYSC Orientation Camps in the country.
The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu stated this while declaring open the 2025 NYSC Camp Managers Workshop held in Abuja.
The DG, while commending some State Governments for improving the facilities in their Orientation Camps, through general renovation and upgrade of their facilities also bemoaned the State of infrastructure in some like; outdated hostel accommodation, substandard parade grounds, overstretched and dilapidated facilities, among others.
General Nafiu, whose address was read by the Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr Ahmed Wada Ikaka called on NYSC State Coordinators and Camp Managers to rededicate themselves to strengthening of cordial relationship with the communities hosting the camps.
He directed all State Secretariats to constitute community advisory committee that would enhance liaising with traditional leaders, youth leaders, local authorities and other stakeholders to create a sense of shared responsibilities.
“We must strengthen to enforce stricter access control and drill the NYSC staff and other Camp Officials and Corps Members on emergency responses”, General Nafiu added.
The Director General also reiterated that his administration was committed to providing a conducive environment for the effective and successful conduct of Orientation Exercises.
He said the success of every service year begins with a hitch-free Orientation Course, and the Camps which serve as the first point of contact for every Corps Member with the Scheme leave lasting impression that would form and shape their attitude and commitments during other phases of National Service.
Nafiu further said that the Camps must be put in order so as to set the right tone for an impactful service year.
He advised the workshop participants to see the workshop as an avenue to promote right values that would lead to result-oriented camp assignments.
The Director General urged the Camp Managers to intensify their efforts in providing adequate maintenance for the Orientation Camp facilities and avoid any act of sabotage.
“I must stress the safety of the Camps and especially the facilities, that they are non-negotiable,” he added.
The Acting Director, General Services Department, Mrs Yetunde Baderinwa in her address said the workshop was organized to address critical operational challenges in Orientation Camps facility management, which is a crucial aspect of NYSC Orientation Camp administration.
She stated further that the theme of the workshop; “Optimizing Good Maintenance Culture Of Camp Facilities: The Role Of Camp Managers”, was chosen to emphasize the importance of Camp Managers’ efficiency in stakeholder collaboration, community entry and maintenance of the existing Camp infrastructure.
She tasked the Camp Managers in maintaining Camp facilities, ensuring security, and fostering relationships with host communities.
“As an internal security officer of every facility in our Orientation Camps, you are responsible for safeguarding Camp facilities against theft, vandalization, and other unwholesome practices which may arise”, Baderinwa said.
Participants at the workshop include the 37 NYSC Orientation Camp Managers nationwide, Members of NYSC Top Management, resource persons among others.
