ATBU Lifts Ban on Gas Cylinders, Allows Only 3kg in Hostels

The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has reversed its ban on gas cylinders in student hostels, now permitting only 3kg cylinders for cooking.

Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sa’id Umar, announced the decision during an orientation for new students on Sunday. He emphasized that any student found using larger cylinders would have them confiscated.

The policy revision follows consultations and aligns with practices in other institutions. The Student Affairs Division, in collaboration with the Student Union Government (SUG), has also introduced guidelines on gas usage and hostel management.

Meanwhile, the Federal Fire Service’s spokesperson, Umar Lawal, warned students about fire hazards, noting that 90% of fire outbreaks result from carelessness and negligence. He urged students to avoid overloading electrical appliances, which could increase fire risks.

Additionally, former ATBU Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr. Andee Iheme, advised students to adhere strictly to the institution’s rules and remain focused on their academic pursuits.
