Reps Push for Increased Funding for NYSC in 2025 Budget

As the National Assembly moves towards passing the N49.70 trillion 2025 budget proposal, the House of Representatives has called for improved funding for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to enhance its role in national development.

Speaking on Monday, the Deputy Spokesman of the House, Mr. Philip Agbese, emphasized the need for adequate financial support to reform and sustain the NYSC scheme, given its critical contributions to the country’s workforce in both public and private sectors.

Enhancing the NYSC Scheme for National Development

Agbese stressed that the NYSC plays a pivotal role in fostering national unity and providing manpower to various sectors, making it imperative for the scheme to receive better funding.

“The ideals of NYSC must be sustained, which is why we are demanding adequate funding for the scheme. The National Assembly is not satisfied with its current state, and we have resolved to push for better funding to meet the needs of corps members,” Agbese explained.

While he refrained from disclosing the specific amount agreed upon for the NYSC, he noted that corps members contribute significantly to national development and deserve better support.

Improving Welfare and Infrastructure for Corps Members

Agbese highlighted that many corps members face challenges, including inadequate allowances, poor living conditions, and lack of proper facilities in their places of primary assignment. He stated that the proposed budget review aims to address these concerns and ensure that corps members receive improved welfare support.

“We have realized that the NYSC requires better funding to enhance its operations and improve the experience of corps members during their service year,” he added.

Commitment to Strengthening NYSC Operations

The lawmaker reaffirmed the House’s commitment to ensuring that the NYSC is adequately empowered to fulfill its mandate of national service and integration.

“The National Assembly will continue to advocate for policies and budgetary provisions that will strengthen the NYSC and ensure that it remains relevant in fostering unity and development,” Agbese assured.

He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful as the government, in collaboration with the National Assembly, works towards creating a more efficient and impactful NYSC scheme.
